WHO WE ARE
This is a story of hope and inspiration. Paper Miracles symbolizes the principles of positive change. It represents more than the physical transformation of waste paper into paper beads; it is an inspirational movement. Paper Miracles promotes sustainable income generation and development, as a foundation for women to have the means to foster greater independence and the confidence to champion themselves. Anytime one thing transforms into another it is a miracle. Seeing the beaders uncover their inner strength through skills learned by working for themselves is a miracle in itself.
HOW WE STARTED!
The 2005 Kashmir Earthquake devastated thousands of households across Pakistan. A group of women rendered paraplegic by the disaster and abandoned by their families found their way to a shelter near Golra Village, Islamabad. Paralyzed and abandoned by their families, these women had no way to provide for themselves. Despite their trauma, these women showed strong determination to move forward with a positive attitude to rebuild their lives. Inspired by their strength, members of the Rotary Club of Islamabad Renaissance (RCIR) introduced the paper bead making at the paraplegic center as an income-generating activity for the residence. This pilot initiative evolved into Paper Miracles, a self-funded flagship project of Miracles Trust, a registered non-profit in Pakistan. The reach of this pioneering social enterprise continues to expand. We have already expanded from beyond Islamabad to communities in northern and southern Pakistan, and directly impacting the lives of women with limited employment opportunities and mobility access. As paper beads artisans, they engage in income generating activity which creates sustainable livelihood opportunities promoting economic independence. Paper Miracles also instills a greater sense of self dignity and self-esteem for women to partake in making decisions in their communities. For this very reason, our dedicated supporters, including RCIR, have used their resources and efforts to transform the vision of Paper Miracles into reality, because every now and then, we all need a little miracle.

Our Approach
Paper Miracles applies an integrated market driven approach. Often times, micro entrepreneurs and home based workers are unable to sell their products or sustain their business due to their lack of understanding of the market needs. Unlike the typical supply driven, production oriented approach, Paper Miracles works with its value chain development partners, including its paper beads artisans to build their technical skills, long term capacities, and their confidence with a goal to integrate them into the Paper Miracles value chain.

This was followed by taking actions with impact, introducing scalable models for change, with the ultimate goal of turning those changes into a sustainable movement which positively transforms communities. Paper Miracles’ sustainable model is scalable and replicable with great potential to impact many beneficiaries throughout Pakistan. It uses waste paper minimizing input cost. It is culturally appropriate, implementable virtually anywhere and easily replicable throughout Pakistan.
